Retinal hemorrhages were found in 9 of 25 persons exposed to a real altitude of 17,500 ft in the course of high altitude studies on Mt. Logan, Yukon Territory. Retinal photographs demonstrate increased vessel diameter and tortuosity in all persons examined. The retinal changes were not directly related to the severity of symptoms of mountain sickness, to the administration of diuretics before or after ascent, or to the rate of ascent and duration of stay at altitude. It is possible that the observable retinal changes reflect similar changes in cerebral circulation. These abnormalities have not previously been reported.
