This is a rather unusual book for American psychiatry since it approaches the problem of manic depressive illness from an unabashedly descriptive viewpoint. Consequently, some of the terminology may seem foreign to the American reader, although it will be quite familiar to European psychiatrists. The book is an ambitious attempt to review the entire concept of manic depressive illness and then to present the authors' family and population genetic studies. The review of the literature is excellent for use as reference material, especially in areas such as genetics and epidemiology of manic depressive illness, since the authors have more familiarity
