The editor, an anesthesiologist, states that he has written in collaboration with a number of other specialists a practical manual for the use of young physicians of various disciplines who are becoming involved in the problems of intensive care. The first chapters survey problems of organization, layout, monitoring, and so forth. The next few chapters describe general principles of treatment of disturbed physiology, such as acid-base balance, glucose metabolism, respiratory failure, and shock. More than half of the book is then devoted to a discussion of specific entities such as peritonitis, renal failure, neurologic diseases, and tetanus.
