This German handbook of laboratory methods for differential diagnosis has two parts: a survey, in outline and tables, of laboratory features of disease showing particular manifestations (such as anemia, headache, hypertension, icterus) in alphabetical arrangement; and an outline of laboratory tests and results including brief description, material needed, normal and abnormal values (and their causes). Subject index.
This kind of guide may be helpful to prod the memory, but its use as a diagnostic "cookbook" by physicians who lack understanding of the basis for proper selection and interpretation of laboratory tests can lead to mechanical, inferior, and costly medicine.
