In 1926 Microbe Hunters by Paul de Kruif was published. Centering on communicable diseases and the contributions of outstanding investigators, the volume stimulated the interest of many young biologists in the field. The present book by Dr. Wain is well-written in the same popular vein and is not only a good review of the subject but embraces much of the history of medicine. He has a comprehensive grasp of the subject starting with the greatest leader of preventive medicine, Moses, and followed by chapters on ancient Greece, Rome, the medieval epidemics, and then into the "Century of Genius," the seventeenth.
