A patient who had had retroperitoneal fibrosis since 1960 developed nephrotic syndrome 9 years later. Renal biopsy material showing amyloidosis and retroperitoneal fibrosis involving the contralateral ureter was found at surgery for ureteral obstruction. The chronic inflammatory process that characterizes retroperitoneal fibrosis is similar to that seen in other disorders that have been associated with amyloidosis. Retroperitoneal fibrosis may be related to amyloidosis in the same way that other chronic inflammatory diseases are. This is the first report of these two disorders occurring together.
