Two adult male siblings died of primary hepatocellular carcinoma. Both had macronodular cirrhosis with features of subacute progressive viral hepatitis. The hepatitis-associated antigen was present in the serum of one patient; the death of the other preceded the clinical use of this test. The father of these two men died 23 years ago, and his death was attributed to primary hepatocellular carcinoma. Chronic infection with the hepatitis virus and impaired immunity of genetic determination are likely factors in the disease of these family members.
