Maximal oxygen intake (VO2) and ECG responses to multistage treadmill test were determined before and after 3 months of physical training in 14 patients with coronary heart disease. Responses to 0.4 mg nitroglycerin sublingually were measured before training in 11 of these patients. The ST-segment responses were measured by computer averaging 100 beat samples.
After training maximal VO2 increased by 20.8% (P < 0.001), mainly by a greater maximal A-VO2 difference. At submaximal exercise heart rate, blood pressure, and pressure-rate product were lower after training and the ST segment less depressed (P < 0.05). At maximal exercise, however, heart rate
