After discharge from a coronary care unit a number of patients die. As much as 30% of all hospital deaths from acute myocardial infarction occur after the sixth day or after discharge from the coronary care unit. In our experience at least half of these deaths are sudden and unexpected. To study the problem, a special area in the general hospital was equipped for continuous ECG monitoring using telemetry. The area was also equipped with the usual life support measures in the event of cardiac arrest, and the assigned nurses were given special courses in ECG and resuscitation. To date
