Complications, their incidence and preventive management, were studied during 484 percutaneously inserted intravenous catheter placements. Group A consisted of 168 8-in. catheters (114 inserted in forearm veins and 54 in upper arm veins). Group B consisted of 70 21-in. catheters inserted in upper arm veins with the tips advanced into the thorax. Mean duration ol placement for groups A and B was 77 and 104 hr, respectively.
