This study was undertaken to determine if there is a therapeutic advantage in calculating the dosage of 131I by formula or administering instead a fixed dosage of radioactive material. One hundred hyperthyroid patients with either Graves' disease, Plummer's disease, or toxic adenomatous disease were selected. The diagnosis was confirmed by 131I uptake and serum thyroxine (Murphy-Pattee) levels. In 60 patients the dose was calculated by using the formula
