Patients with nontoxic nodular goiter were treated with T8, 50 µg/day, or T4, 200 µg/day, in a double-blind study. Their nodules were measured independently by two examiners at 4-week intervals, without access to previous measurements or to the results of thyroid function studies. The study lasted for 28 weeks; phase 1 for 12 weeks and phase 2 for 16 weeks. At the end of phase 1, decrease in goiter size was evident in 47% of the patients, who were carried on to phase 2 without dosage modification.
