The first complete English translation of Maimonides' collection of original and cited aphorisms (Galen, Hippocrates, and Arabic sources). The explanatory footnotes of the editors clarify many obscure textual points for the amateur in medical history but sometimes go too far in assigning prescience to Maimonides for later developments (as in anticipating Harvey on circulation of the blood) or not far enough (as in failing to explain "cooking" of the urine. Modern physicians who enjoy the game of judging the perceptiveness and skill of medieval and ancient medicine from such aphorisms must be careful to remember that they are looking back
