The late Professor Ludwig Heilmeyer took an active part in the symposium on iron deficiency held in Basel in March 1969, and this book reporting the symposium is appropriately dedicated to his memory. He contributed, incidentally, a little gem to the list of causes of iron deficiency—blood loss in the owner of a flea circus who fed his charges on himself!
