KENNETH V. SCHWARTZ
To the editor: I would like to reply to the article of Drs. Gwinup, Chelvam, and Steinberg in the March issue (Ann Intern Med 74:408-411, 1971). The thesis of "spot reduction" expressed by Mayer (1) assumes that removal of excessive fat in an area will be enhanced by exercise in that area. I do not feel that very active tennis players provide a good model for this concept.
Any tennis player or watcher will readily agree that the nonracket arm is hardly a limp overweight extremity; in fact it is used extensively for throwing balls up, balance, and so forth.
