Prompted by the resident's loose-leaf notebook, this manual was designed to provide "heart-of-the-matter" information about the problems most often encountered by the resident in hospital practice. In this third edition, as in earlier ones, the discussion about each topic generally includes a brief clinical description, suggestions for laboratory testing, an outline of therapeutic options, and one or more references. The recent references usually date from 1968 and occasionally 1969. Some therapeutic recommendations, therefore, are outdated.
