Among the clinical forms of venous thrombosis, phlegmasia cerulea dolens is uncommon, and venous gangrene is rare. In this volume it is suggested that these variants (which are characterized by extensive thrombosis, limited to the venous circulation and often in association with shock) are commoner than is generally believed. The evidence to support this conclusion is unconvincing.
Brevity would have improved this monograph, in which the clinical descriptions are excellent and the bibliographic documentation extensive. (Stanford Wessler, M.D., Washington University, St. Louis, Mo.)
