The appropriate management of most endocrine diseases often depends on the physician's knowledge of laboratory studies. Because laboratory studies usually yield definitive information, with respect to both screening out patients with subclinical endocrinopathies and confirming the expected diseases, much of the current literature of endocrinology deals with progress in extending and refining methods of laboratory evaluation. The second edition of this book follows nine years after the first, which was published in 1962 and also contains material given at a postgraduate course held at the University of California Medical Center.
