An embarrassingly long time (15 years) has elapsed since the last major American textbook of dermatology was published. In this important interval dermatologists have widened their interests beyond the traditional preoccupation with gross and microscopic morphology; function has become as important as structure, and there has been a movement to rejoin the mainstream of American medicine by the investigation of pathogenetic and therapeutic mechanisms with modern tools and techniques.
