Is it possible to produce a clear and concise textbook of medicine that is complete and does not age too quickly? The rapid proliferation of medical information would overwhelm such an attempt. Nevertheless many things in medicine do not change. Disease remains the same within a generation or two, and with it, basic principles of diagnosis and treatment. A good textbook builds on this nucleus, and with each new edition changes are added that are significant in the eyes of the author.
