Five young men with untreated leprosy—dimorphous, becoming tuberculoid, in one; lepromatous in four—were brought from Mexico to Bethesda, where they were hospitalized for 3 to 9 months and investigated more thoroughly than any previous patients with leprosy. A total of 125 biopsies were taken—from skin, nerves, muscle, liver, kidney, gut, and testicle! The list of serologic, hematologic, and biochemical examinations is too long to give here.
