The authors' long-standing interest in and previous contributions to the study of the effects of chronic alcoholism on the human nervous system are well known. Several previous publications by Drs. Victor and Adams are important landmarks in this field. This volume is a carefully constructed clinical and pathologic study of 245 patients that includes the results of 82 postmortem examinations. This extensive review summarizes and extends much of the authors' previous work. Many of the conclusions, such as the identity, as far as pathologic substrate, of Wernicke's disease and Korsakoff's psychosis, are not new but are not as widely known
