Sir Francis Walshe in Further Critical Studies in Neurology and other Essays and Addresses (itself a reprinting of his articles) dismissed symposia, "symposiasts," and the "symposionaut" as superfluous (page 243). In his view the published symposium only yields "the blurred and amplified echo of what we have already heard." It is, therefore, particularly appropriate to recommend this book, published in England, as an example of a useful symposium. It is not superlative or flawlessly polished, but it is an excellent distillation of an enormous and confusing literature on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias.
