To the editor: I enjoyed the article, "Chronic Idiopathic Leukocytosis," by Ward and Reinhard in the August 1971 issue, but it seems to me that the authors might have given a better perspective to their observations if they had considered the elevation of the leukocyte count as a biologic variation, such as is expounded by Dr. Roger Williams in Biochemical Individuality (John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Publishers, New York, 1956). He took pains to point out that our concept of normality for measured variables is based on inadequate sampling and that a wider sampling always reveals the limits of normality
