One seldom has the opportunity to read a text that meets the basic requirements laid down by the author: that each condition discussed is of sufficient importance to be known by the physician; and that if it is rare and uncommon it illustrates a fundamental mechanism, principle, or treatment in medicine. The author has presented a succinct, concise view of many of the most important fields in hematology. However, some of his discussions are perhaps too concise and might be better supported by a more selective or extensive bibliography.
