Since Congress has taken the initiative in the care, treatment, and prevention of emotional illness by enacting Public Law 89-749-1966, many publications have dealt with the subject of community mental health or community psychiatry. This book is intended, as stated in the preface, for those "entering or leaving" careers in this rather new field.
The concept of catchment areas is critically reviewed., but no alternatives are offered or even mentioned. The author's statement that, contrary to having a romantic readiness to serve the community, a mental health center must know in advance what it can do and what it wishes
