The author indicates the place of the various units for each quantity, such as mass, pressure, length, on the scale of magnitudes for which it has to be measured and weighs the appropriateness of the units for those magnitudes. He has flavored his text with history and wit. Danloux-Dumesnils's critique is entertaining and thoroughly informative: I recommend it as first choice to the reader who wants a single good book about present and future trends in metric usage in science.
