The immense amount of material that must be covered in a textbook of general medicine necessitates either a massive volume or the compromise of only light coverage of some areas. If the latter approach is chosen, great care must be taken to avoid giving the student the impression that the information given is the complete answer to a problem. There are areas in this text where this potential fault has been well handled and others where a "cut and dried" impression comes through, particularly in the therapy sections, where the emphasis is clinical and not pathophysiological.
