With a discussion of the literature on the behavior of cigarette smoking, this text is a compilation of a logically well-knit series of experiments done by the author over a period of years. First he explores the phenomena of smoking behavior in diverse age and sex samples, using a range of testing instruments such as questionnaires and diaries. As the primary motivational factors come to the surface as pleasure, social cohesion, and tension reduction, he develops his own instruments to investigate these factors more intensely.
