Chapters, by various authors, from Freedman and Kaplan's (editors) Comprehensive Textbook of Psychiatry, assembled to give, in Volume I, a summary of psychiatric diagnostic classification (DSM-II/APA), a short account of child development, a longer account of inner emotional difficulties, and a survey of testing and examination methods, and in Volume II, a description of the major problems—neurosis, psychosis, addiction, mental retardation—and their treatment.
The first 100 pages of the two volumes (history of child psychiatry, normal development, and classification) are identical.
There are other accounts of emotional and mental development that are fuller and clearer (such as Lidz's The Person)
