The newest candidates for the role of causative agents in systemic lupus erythematosus are the haemobartonella and related rickettsiae, small coccoid organisms commonly associated with the production of hemolytic anemia in several animal species. Kallick and associates (1) have reported finding small round bodies, 0.3 to 0.5 mm in diameter, in erythrocytes of eight consecutive patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. These bodies produced bright fluorescence after being stained with acridine orange, a dye with a strong affinity for RNA and DNA.
