In their preface the editors make a virtue of conciseness, which they attribute to the authority of the contributors. Perhaps, but it is difficult to see how any book of pathology, whatever its approach, can encompass the complexities of syphilis in 22 lines and the manifestations of tuberculosis in not much more. It is good to give emphasis to pathogenesis rather than to the static concept of morbid anatomy. But some book has to deal with the descriptive aspects of pathology, and the average penurious medical student (there are still plenty of them) will prefer whatever textbook combines the two
