The editors' purpose in compiling this monograph was to provide an up-to-date reference text on various aspects of drug dependence. They have succeeded admirably in presenting reviews of the literature and theories of the 33 authors.
The text is divided into sections on the significance and characteristics, diagnostic criteria, chemical aspects, physiologic and pharmacologic aspects, and biochemical aspects of drug dependence.
The first two sections unfortunately present a major problem: the inability to agree even on definitions of psychological dependence, physical dependence, and drug abuse. Furthermore, the authors do not agree on whether amphetamine use can create physical dependence. H. F.
