The development of methods for assaying pluripotenital hematic precursor cells has opened a new and exciting avenue of study of the elusive stem cell. Since 1961, when Till and McCulloch described the spleen colony assay, an extensive literature has been generated characterizing colony forming units, measured by their ability to produce colonies of hematic cells either in vivo, in the spleen, or in vitro, under various culture conditions.
