Data on the use of short-stay hospitals, abstracted from a national sample of medical records of discharged patients: discharges, days of care, and average length of stay reported by age, sex, and ethnicity of the discharged patients, and by region, bed size, and type of ownership of the hospitals. Comparisons of data with those for 1965 and 1966 to identify changes in patterns of hospital use after institution of Medicare. Methods and definitions described in two appendices.
