Compared to the previous volumes of Virology Monographs, the recent one on varicella virus is more clinically oriented. The text is shorter, but the description is clearer.
Less than half of the book involves the discussion of the basic virology; the rest is on clinical virology, which includes clinical pathological features, immunity, epidemiology, pathogenesis, prophylaxis, treatment, and laboratory diagnosis. In all sections chicken pox and zoster are discussed in parallel fashion.
A few points may have escaped the authors' attention:  the use of the indirect hemagglutination-inhibition test for the diagnosis of varicella-zoster infections;  the role of cellular immunity
