To the editor: Our medical literature has been wanting material like that presented by Dr. Clouser ("'The Sanctity of life': An Analysis of a Concept." Ann Intern Med 78:119-125, 1973). Being so deeply immersed in the "institutionalized dehumanization" of patients ("Distance Between the Doctor and the Patient." Ann Intern Med 78:64, 1973), we find it difficult to maintain an appreciation of those ideas that are most basic and, indeed, give cause and reason to the establishment and continuation of the practice of medicine.
