To the editor: After noting the description by George L. Engel of three cases of sudden death during joyful meeting after long years of separation (Ann Intern Med 69:293-300, 1969), I used the unique opportunity of the introduction of the new regulations for Berlin visitors to East Berlin (1972) to gather evidence bearing on his thesis of a relation of sudden death to emotional status.
