Diagnostic laboratory procedures necessary for evaluating the patient with gastrointestinal symptoms are thoroughly presented in this manual, thereby enabling the regular office medical assistant to rapidly become proficient.
Secretory functions of stomach and pancreas and, to a limited degree, the gallbladder are systematically covered. Methods are carefully outlined for cytological evaluation of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract, esophageal perfusion, small-bowel biopsy, and localization of upper gastrointestinal bleeding by intubation and string test. The role of the assistant in esophageal dilation and in upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, except colonoscopy, is amply presented.
