Its heft alone bespeaks the seriousness of this book, and close inspection discovers its importance. Not one of its 1159 pages is wasted. It is an extraordinary book whose creation is obviously the product of many years of thinking, planning, and gleaning. The reader experiences a kind of perceptual contradiction: its fine print, footnotes, and thickness set him up for a dull, pendantic experience, yet he quickly becomes so engrossed he can hardly put it down save to rest his arms.
