In recent years many multiauthored textbooks have been criticized by reviewers as variable in quality, repetitious, and, because of poor editing, confusing owing to controversy between the contributors. Thus Drs. Holman and Muschenheim, rather than their 52 collaborators, must assume the blame for these same faults in this new two-volume textbook, a survey of the medical and surgical aspects of lung disease. They have sueceeded in presenting the modern concepts about many topics in pulmonary disease, but, generally, the quality of the book is disappointing.
