The use of empiric, broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy in the treatment of presumed Gram-negative sepsis is nowhere more necessary than in the granulocytopenic patient, for without such therapy early (48 to 72 hours) death rates may exceed 50%. Since February 1971 the combination of carbenicillin, gentamicin, and cephalothin has been empirically applied to granulocytopenic (less than 1500/mm3), febrile (more than 38.3 °C [101 °F]) cancer patients at the first clinical suspicion of sepsis.
