To the editor: I read with interest the recent article by K. Danner Clouser on the concept of "the sanctity of life" (Ann Intern Med 78:119-125, 1973). I agree with much of what he said and very likely with much of what he left unsaid, but the tone of his article bothers me to some degree. Probably the concept of the sanctity of life did, as he asserts, have a religious origin. Furthermore, I judge that it can only be completely specified and analyzed within a religious frame of reference. But the concept is an expression of a basic intuition
