Occasionally, there is a pleasant surprise in reading medical "pocket books". This small volume contains a concise and up-to-date review of the problems and theories concerning the survival of the fetus as a natural transplant. The author's approach is pleasant: a great deal of material with few wasted words. Sections are logically divided into maternal relationships, fetal relationships, the placenta, and immunological aspects. Each section is amazingly complete, with a review of early experiments, presentation of animal and human data, and references.
