To the editor: The article by Brook, Berg, and Schechter in the March issue (pp. 333-339) was stimulating. As one who is concerned daily with the problems of providing ambulatory care in a metropolitan teaching hospital, I wish to comment on some of the important issues in that paper.
We must critically assess the role of the emergency room in the provision of primary, nonurgent medical care.
