To the editor: The interview with potential intern candidates has been viewed as a valuable instrument in determining the success of the candidate as a house officer. As more medical schools and graduate programs adopt a pass-fail grading system, reliable criteria and instruments need to be developed for more efficient use of increasingly scarce educational resources.
Whether the interview can be relied on for such discrimination was looked at in our own intern-selection process. Each candidate was given a cumulative rating as excellent, good, or satisfactory by two faculty members of the Department of Medicine. This rating was compared with
