Because the recent rapid growth in medical literature has roughly paralleled the growth of medical knowledge, it is impossible for the individual physician, course director, house staff officer, medical student, or hospital librarian to know and adequately evaluate all the available texts and journals in the many fields of internal medicine and in the many other specialties and clinical fields related to the practice of internal medicine.
