To the editor: Gaeke and Gaeke, in their article on filing medical literature (Ann Intern Med 78:985-987, 1973), make a very good case for using the table of contents and index of a "standard" text on internal medicine as the basis for a simple, expandable literature-filing system. Until recently, I had used Chatton and Sanazaro's Current Medical References (5th ed., 1967) in a similar fashion, most of the time using files designated by chapter only. But articles were numbered according to chapter and the page number of their text, to incorporate the index of the text itself. In condensed form,
