In Africa a widow becomes the wife of the husband's heir, for her own social and financial security. In the United States childless widows are more likely to enter psychiatric institutions. This is just one example of the many social and cultural effects on the mental health of the elderly that are discussed in this interesting report, whose purpose is to emphasize the urgent need for greater scientific effort on which to base recommendations for better care of the elderly. Epidemiological studies are badly needed, and, to make these more meaningful, a better classification of mental disorders is proposed. There
