Imagine an orchestra of professional musicians accompanying Cesar Franck's "Symphonic Variations for Piano" and conducted from the keyboard by a gifted amateur. The theme is big, almost grandiose. Some of the orchestral playing is secure, some only adequate. The soloist conductor plays his own notes well enough but without real musicianship, and his control of the whole work lacks authority. That is my impression of this book.
